Open Question: How can I resolve the 'Anti-pollution' fault on my 206cc 2 litre?

A while ago (can't remember exactly) got the the 'Anti-pollution' fault (I'll call it the AP fault from now on) on the central display of my 2002 2 litre 206cc together with the yellow engine light on the dashboard. Performance of the car has not been affected; starts OK, drives OK, acceleration OK, no juddering etc. The wife took into a Peugeot approved garage who hooked it up to a laptop and said "it's probably the cat luv". Seeing as replacing the cat would cost about £650 + fitting + VAT I'm keen to explore other options! The garage reset the ECU and the AP fault disappeared for a few weeks then  it came back again. Drove around for a couple of weeks and it then disappeared again. This has happened a couple of times since, just ignore it and it seems to go away, but I would like to get it fixed as at some time soon I would like to sell the car. My thoughts are if it was the cat then the fault wouldn't come and go, as it can't fix itself once it is faulty, so I'm thinking it could be a sensor fault, I've heard that Pugs can suffer from this, could this be the problem?. Can anyone out there help out, and I'm pretty handy with a spanner so is there anything I can do before resorting to a garage/main dealer?
